This chapter fills up an advanced analysis of the state-of-the-art design in programmable SoC systems, giving a critical overall vision for every designer to implement real time operating systems and concurrent processing. The content of the chapter is divided in the next four main sections. First the evolution timeline of FPGA based systems is covered from its beginning until the last AP SoC chips. They are complex devices and it is necessary to have a well-known understanding to utilise them in the more efficient form possible. The more important advance digital systems structures and architectures are described. The embedded AP SoCs are analysed and main design methodologies are covered, focusing in hardware and co-design strategies. In this section is described the development of a real open source application that covers the fundamental parts in the design of a SoC system, ranging from the hardware development until the software design involving the embedded operating system and the user interface application. Finally, the system described in the last section is tested in a real scientific experiment and the results are evaluated

Comparison of bar strengths in optical and near-infrared for the OSUBSGS sample

We use a gravitational bar torque method to compare bar strengths (the maximum tangential force normalized by radial force) in B and H-band images of 152 galaxies from the Ohio State University Bright Spiral Galaxy Survey. Our main motivation is to check how much the difference in the rest-frame wavelength could affect comparisons of bar strengths in low and high redshift observations. Between these two bands we find an average bar strength ratio Q_B/H= 1.25 which factor is nearly independent of the morphological type. We show that Q_B/H > 1 is mostly due to reduced bulge dilution of radial forces in the B-band. The bar torque method needs an estimate for the vertical scale height of the galaxy, based on the radial scale length of the disk and the galaxy's morphological type. Since these two might not always be possible to determine at high redshifts in a reliable manner, we also checked that similar results are obtained with vertical scale heights estimated from the radii corresponding to the K-band surface brightness of 20 mag/arcsec^2. Also, we made a simple test of the usability of the bar torque method at high redshifts by checking the effects of image degradation (nearest neighbour sampling without any adjustment of noise levels): we found that the estimated bar strengths varied by +/- 10% at most as long as the total extent of the bar was at least 10 pixels. Overall, we show that the gravitational bar torque method should provide a proficient tool for quantifying bar strengths also at high redshifts.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, accepted to MNRA

RF Acquisition System Based on μTCA for Testing of High-Gradient Acceleration Cavities

The radio frequency (RF) laboratory hosted in the Corpuscular Physics Institute (IFIC) of the University of Valencia is designed to house a high-power and high-repetition-rate facility to test normal conduction RF accelerator cavities in the S-Band (2.9985 GHz) in order to perform R&D activities related to particle accelerator cavities. The system, which manages the entire process of RF signal generation, data acquisition and closed-loop control of the laboratory, is currently based on a modular and compact PXI platform system. This contribution details the development of a platform with similar features, but which is based on open architecture standards at both the hardware and software level. For this purpose, a complete system based on the μTCA platform has been developed. This new system must be able to work with accelerator cavities at other operating frequencies, such as 750 MHz, as well as to explore different options at firmware and software levels based on open-source codes

Design and Study of a Wide-Band Printed Circuit Board Near-Field Probe

Magnetic near-field probes (NFP) represent a suitable tool to measure the magnetic field level from a small electromagnetic interference (EMI) source. This kind of antenna is useful as a magnetic field probe for pre-compliance EMC measurements or debugging tasks since the user can scan a printed circuit board (PCB) looking for locations with strong magnetic fields. When a strong H-field point is found, the designer should check the PCB layout and components placement in that area to detect if this could result in an EMI source. This contribution focuses on analyzing the performance of an easy to build and low-cost H-field NFP designed and manufactured using a standard PCB stack-up. Thereby, the frequency range and sensitivity of the NFP-PCB are analyzed through a Finite Element Method (FEM) simulation model that makes it possible to evaluate its sensibility and effective frequency range. The numerical results obtained with the FEM models are validated against measurements to verify the design and performance of our NFP. The FEM model reproduces the experimental procedure, which is used to evaluate the performance of the NFP in terms of sensitivity by means of the simulated near-field distribution. The NFP-PCB has almost a flat response from 180 MHz to 6 GHz, with an almost perfect concordance between numerical and experimental S21 results. The numerical results show an average transmission loss of −27.9 dB by considering the flat response bandwidth, whereas the experimental one is −29.7 dB. Finally, the designed NFP is compared to two high-quality commercial probes in order to analyze its performance

HST Morphologies of z ~ 2 Dust-Obscured Galaxies II: Bump Sources

    Get PDF
We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of 22 ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z~2 with extremely red R-[24] colors (called dust-obscured galaxies, or DOGs) which have a local maximum in their spectral energy distribution (SED) at rest-frame 1.6um associated with stellar emission. These sources, which we call "bump DOGs", have star-formation rates of 400-4000 Msun/yr and have redshifts derived from mid-IR spectra which show strong polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission --- a sign of vigorous on-going star-formation. Using a uniform morphological analysis, we look for quantifiable differences between bump DOGs, power-law DOGs (Spitzer-selected ULIRGs with mid-IR SEDs dominated by a power-law and spectral features that are more typical of obscured active galactic nuclei than starbursts), sub-millimeter selected galaxies (SMGs), and other less-reddened ULIRGs from the Spitzer extragalactic First Look Survey (XFLS). Bump DOGs are larger than power-law DOGs (median Petrosian radius of 8.4 +/- 2.7 kpc vs. 5.5 +/- 2.3 kpc) and exhibit more diffuse and irregular morphologies (median M_20 of -1.08 +/- 0.05 vs. -1.48 +/- 0.05). These trends are qualitatively consistent with expectations from simulations of major mergers in which merging systems during the peak star-formation rate period evolve from M_20 = -1.0 to M_20 = -1.7. Less obscured ULIRGs (i.e., non-DOGs) tend to have more regular, centrally peaked, single-object morphologies rather than diffuse and irregular morphologies. This distinction in morphologies may imply that less obscured ULIRGs sample the merger near the end of the peak star-formation rate period. Alternatively, it may indicate that the intense star-formation in these less-obscured ULIRGs is not the result of a recent major merger.Comment: Accepted to ApJ; 22 pages, 8 Figures, 7 Table

Dependence of Barred Galaxy Fraction on Galaxy Properties and Environment

We investigate the dependence of occurrence of bars in galaxies on galaxy properties and environment. We use a volume-limited sample of 33,391 galaxies brighter than Mr=19.5+5M_{r}=-19.5+5loghh at 0.02z0.054890.02\le z\le0.05489, drawn from the SDSS DR 7. We classify the galaxies into early and late types, and identify bars by visual inspection. Among 10,674 late-type galaxies with axis ratio b/a>0.60b/a>0.60, we find 3,240 barred galaxies (fbar=30.4f_{bar}=30.4%) which divide into 2,542 strong bars (fSB1=23.8f_{SB1}=23.8%) and 698 weak bars (fSB2=6.5f_{SB2}=6.5%). We find that fSB1f_{SB1} increases as uru-r color becomes redder, and that it has a maximum value at intermediate velocity dispersion (σ\sigma\simeq150 km s1^{-1}). This trend suggests that strong bars are dominantly hosted by intermediate-mass systems. Weak bars prefer bluer galaxies with lower mass and lower concentration. In the case of strong bars, their dependence on the concentration index appears only for massive galaxies with σ>150\sigma>150 km s1^{-1}. We also find that fbarf_{bar} does not directly depend on the large-scale background density when other physical parameters (uru-r color or σ\sigma) are fixed. We discover that fSB1f_{SB1} decreases as the separation to the nearest neighbor galaxy becomes smaller than 0.1 times the virial radius of the neighbor regardless of neighbor's morphology. These results imply that strong bars are likely to be destroyed during strong tidal interactions, and that the mechanism for this phenomenon is gravitational and not hydrodynamical. The fraction of weak bars has no correlation with environmental parameters. We do not find any direct evidence for environmental stimulation of bar formation.Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in Ap
